Bản ngã là một chủ đề thường xuất hiện trong các tác phẩm văn học phương Tây hiện đại, một trong số đó là Demian: Câu chuyện tuổi trẻ của Emil Sinclair của Hermann Hesse. Bài viết này tập trung khám phá tiến trình hình thành bản ngã của nhân vật Emil Sinclair khi cậu tìm hiểu về tiếng gọi nội tâm và sự phá vỡ những đạo lý truyền thống. Theo đó, Hermann Hesse đã lồng ghép các biểu tượng tôn giáo như thế giới ánh sáng và bóng tối, Abraxas để làm rõ tiến trình phát triển bản ngã của nhân vật Emil Sinclair qua từng giai đoạn trưởng thành về nhận thức. Qua đó, tác phẩm mở rộng suy tư về bản chất con người trong thời hiện đại, khi con người kiếm tìm sự cứu rỗi thông qua sự chấp nhận cái tôi toàn vẹn của chính mình. Trong bối cảnh đó, biểu tượng tôn giáo đóng vai trò song hành với quá trình tìm hiểu và phát triển bản thân của mỗi người.
