Abstract

Shinto, the indigenous religion of Japan, originated from the spiritual beliefs of Neolithic settlers and has evolved over millennia through interactions with foreign cultural influences. Despite these external impacts, Shinto remains a foundational element of Japanese identity, shaping both individual and collective perceptions and behaviors. This paper explores how Shinto principles such as reverence for nature, optimism, realism, communal consciousness, respect for authority, honesty, integrity, and responsibility—have influenced the cognitive and behavioral traits of the Japanese people. By synthesizing relevant scholarly studies, the article aims to clarify the role of Shinto in the formation of Japanese ideology and contribute to cross-cultural understanding, particularly in the context of contemporary relations between Vietnam and Japan.
